Trump and American Culture: A Critical Vision by Jean-Marc Jancovici

Jean-Marc Jancovici, an engineer and energy and climate expert, has criticized American culture, particularly under Donald Trump. He describes the United States as a country with "weapons of power" and a "domination mentality," emphasizing that Trump is emblematic of this aspect of American culture.

In a commentary posted on LinkedIn, Jancovici observes that for decades, the United States has been seen as a model to emulate, particularly for its role in the liberation of Europe and its technological leadership. However, he notes a shift toward excesses, such as high rates of obesity, incarceration, gun violence, and inequality, as well as a reliance on consumerism and technology at the expense of sobriety and community. He concludes that Europeans, and the French in particular, should stop blindly following the American model and instead chart their own course.

Regarding environmental policy, Jancovici points out that the United States, due to its vast territory and abundant resources, has historically adopted an approach of unlimited consumption. He claims that the country "doesn't understand what a limit is," making it difficult to manage the restrictions needed to combat climate change. He encourages Europe not to wait for the United States to act, but to take the lead in decarbonization.

Under the Trump presidency, funding cuts have been made to scientific research, and many researchers have been laid off, which could hamper global efforts to understand and combat climate change. Jancovici warns that these actions could have negative consequences not only for American science, but also for global science.

In short, Jancovici warns against a US policy that, under the guise of power, could jeopardize global efforts to combat climate change and exacerbate international tensions.
